On February 25, 2014, Steven Steve Finckbeiner, 63, was shot and killed at LaPlace Feed & Supply in LaPlace, Louisiana, a family business he ran with his wife Connie for more than 28 years. Two men entered the store that Tuesday afternoon intending to rob the couple; both Steve and Connie were shot. Steve sustained three gunshot wounds and died at the scene. Connie was shot in the face and survived.
The St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office investigation identified two men connected to the incident. One, Charles McQuarter III, was arrested and charged. The other, Dracier Dewey, reportedly accompanied McQuarter to the feed store and later testified at trial. Video surveillance from a nearby auto shop was cited as crucial evidence, while defense testimony emphasized the absence of DNA, a murder weapon, or gunshot residue at the scene.
In March 2019 a jury found Charles McQuarter III guilty of second-degree murder and armed robbery with a firearm; the jury deliberated for nearly two hours. Anyone with memories of the store, the area that afternoon, or information about the crime is asked to come forward.
