A hunting trip near Loranger, Louisiana, ended in tragedy for 33-year-old Joseph H. Stevens Jr. of Hammond on December 6, 2013. Stevens was walking with his hunting partner and friend, Stacey M. Trapp, when Trapp crouched to go under some bushes with a .270 caliber bolt action rifle slung over his shoulder. The rifle discharged as Trapp moved and a single bullet struck Stevens, killing him instantly.
Agents from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and deputies from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office arrived at about 2:30 p.m. on Highway 1062. Investigators determined the shooting was accidental and did not suspect foul play; no arrests were made. Stevens was described as an avid outdoorsman who loved nature and cherished time with his children. If anyone knew Joseph or was on that hunting area that day and can help fill in details, please come forward.
