On the night of December 2, 2012, 16-year-old Darnisha Diana Harris, an African American female from Breaux Bridge, Louisiana, was shot and killed by a police officer after a confrontation on Landry Street. Officers had responded to a disturbance; Darnisha, who was on probation for a prior incident involving a police officer, was driving erratically and struck a police cruiser and a bystander before her car ended up in a ditch. Officer Travis Guillot of the Breaux Bridge Police Department fired two shots into the vehicle. Darnisha was pronounced dead in the emergency room of a local hospital.
The Louisiana State Police investigated the incident and a St. Martin Parish grand jury declined to indict Officer Guillot. The family has held prayer services and balloon releases at her grave in St. Rosa Lima Cemetery. Community members continue to mourn and debate the legal outcome.
Did anyone in Breaux Bridge at the time have direct knowledge of the moments on Landry Street or the events that followed?
