On March 4, 2010, Corporal Clovis Wayne J.r. Searcy Jr., a 33-year-old deputy with the Ouachita Parish Sheriff’s Office and a U.S. Air Force veteran, responded with a partner to an aggravated assault call on Browning Road in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana. Witnesses had reported a man attempting to run people over with his vehicle. The deputies found the suspect, Michael Tanner, outside his vehicle.

Corporal Searcy approached with a taser and ordered Tanner to raise his hands. As Tanner complied, he produced a handgun from the small of his back and fired, striking Searcy twice. Searcy was taken to St. Francis Medical Center and died of his wounds on March 6, 2010. Tanner, a convicted felon, was shot and killed at the scene by Searcy’s partner.
