A routine shift at a Victoria’s Secret in the Mall of Acadiana became deadly on August 25, 2006. Sherika Broussard, 21, was shot to death in the store’s stockroom at about 5:30 p.m. The shooting was reported as domestic in nature; police identified the gunman as Broussard’s 21-year-old ex-boyfriend, Nathan O’Neil Jr. of Lafayette.
Witnesses saw O’Neil at the mall before the attack, and after the shooting he fled into the parking lot. Mall security and an off-duty Lafayette police officer who was working security heard the gunfire, were directed to where O’Neil had gone, and confronted him as he was about to get into a vehicle. When he turned toward officers with the handgun, one officer fired and O’Neil died at the scene.
Anyone who knew Sherika, who worked at the Mall of Acadiana that summer, or who has information about her last hours is asked to come forward.
