Patrolman First Class David Christopher Ezernack, a decorated Alexandria Police Officer, was killed in the line of duty while serving with the Special Response Team. He had been with the Alexandria Police Department for nearly four years and had been named VFW Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2002; his father had also served the department and retired as chief.

Officers were attempting to gather evidence at a Wise Street residence in connection with an ambush the previous day, when the suspect—who was wanted for firing multiple shots from an automatic weapon into a patrol car—opened fire. A gun battle lasting more than twenty minutes followed. Patrolman Ezernack and Patrolman Jeremy Carruth were fatally wounded; Ezernack died about five hours after being shot and Carruth was pronounced dead at a hospital. Three other officers were injured and the suspect, a convicted felon who had violated parole, was also killed in the shootout.

Were there witnesses or neighbors on Wise Street who saw the events that afternoon and can add details about the timeline or the suspect’s presence?
