On the late afternoon of August 30, 1982, a home in Marrero, Louisiana became the scene of a mass killing that left five family members dead. Sheila Thomas, 27, a Jefferson Parish deputy sheriff, was among those killed along with her 4-year-old daughter Chantelle Osborne, the child’s father Carl Osborne, Sheila’s mother Myrtle Griffin, and her stepfather Owen Griffin. Three victims were found still seated at the dining table after gunfire ripped through the family dinner.
Police named 30-year-old Leslie Lowenfield, described as Sheila’s former boyfriend, as the principal suspect. The relationship had reportedly been tumultuous, with a pattern of breakups and reconciliations; Sheila had sought help from the Sheriff’s department several times because of harassment and threats, and Lowenfield had been arrested the week before for assaulting and threatening her at a cafe. Five first-degree murder warrants were issued for Lowenfield.
Does anyone have memories of the neighborhood or the family that could shed light on what happened that day?
