JaQuon Jamario McCoy, 24, was shot and killed in the early morning hours of August 31, 2022, near the 400 block of Scipio Court in Hope Mills, North Carolina. He was struck in the chest, taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, and died of his injuries.

An affidavit in support of a search warrant says McCoy threatened three people in a vehicle, including his sister’s girlfriend, with a handgun after learning the girlfriend had struck his sister earlier that day. The affidavit describes McCoy, his sister, and another man surrounding the vehicle in an ambush-style confrontation. One occupant of the vehicle opened fire; police collected area video that corroborated the occupants’ accounts. After the shooting McCoy was driven away in a dark sedan.

The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office classified the shooting as a justifiable homicide, described it as a self-defense incident, announced no charges would be filed, and closed the investigation. Does anyone have information about McCoy, the people involved, or the events that led up to that night?
