On July 31, 2022, 19-year-old Yusuff Haamid-Sumpter was found dead from a gunshot wound at Dickerson Park in Monroe, North Carolina. Monroe Police discovered the body at about 7:45 a.m. and determined the death was the result of a shooting.

Investigators identified three suspects in the case: two juveniles whose names were not disclosed and an adult, Mekhi Barrino-Straing, who surrendered to police on August 4, 2022. All three were charged with first-degree murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit a felony. The U.S. Marshals assisted in locating one juvenile suspect hiding in a residence in Albemarle.
