Shawn Darnell Whren Jr was 31 when he was shot and killed on July 1, 2022, in Statesville, North Carolina. Officers responded to reports of gunshots about 4:15 a.m. and found him inside a home on Fifth Street near Winston Avenue. He was taken to Iredell Memorial Hospital by Iredell County EMS and later died of his injuries.

Investigators say this was the third person killed on Fifth Street in under two months. The Statesville Police Department obtained a first-degree murder warrant for 37-year-old Carl Anthony Cathey, who was identified as the suspect; Cathey turned himself in just before 11 p.m. and is being held without bond. The shooting has heightened community concern about violence on that street.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Statesville Police Department.
