Amy Raelynne Phillips, 46, of Conover, North Carolina, was shot and killed at her home on 30th Street Northeast on June 19, 2022. Deputies from the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office responded just before dawn on June 18, 2022, to a report of a breaking or entering and found Amy and her daughter, 22-year-old Keiyara Kelly Johnson, with gunshot wounds. Amy was pronounced dead at the scene; Keiyara was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.
County investigators say the incident began as a domestic disturbance. A 24-year-old man, Shykwon Rashad Gibbs, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder, attempted murder, and first-degree burglary; he was held without bond and made a first appearance in Catawba County District Court on June 20, 2022. Amy was born February 25, 1975, worked in the textiles industry, attended Winkler’s Grove Baptist Church in Hickory, and is survived by her children Dillon Phillips and Keiyara KJ Johnson and four grandchildren.
What details about the night of the shooting or the people involved could help explain how this domestic disturbance escalated to murder and attempted murder?
