Brandon Lee Gibson was 44 when he was found dead on Ebb Road in Haywood County on January 16, 2022. Deputies responding to a 911 call for a gunshot injury discovered Gibson at the scene; he had been shot multiple times, including in the head. The circumstances were described as initially unclear.

Investigators learned Gibson had gone to the home of 19-year-old David Vaughn over a $40 debt related to marijuana. Court documents and reports say an altercation occurred earlier that day and that Vaughn claimed Gibson tried to break into the house. Vaughn was arrested and charged with second-degree murder after police say he shot Gibson multiple times with a .22 long revolver rifle.
