Takeyia De’Shay Berry, a 39-year-old African American woman, was one of three people killed in a shooting on December 2, 2021, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Berry, her 3-year-old daughter Allura Pledger and 18-year-old Jaquan White were shot while inside a car parked just outside a home in a residential area off Perry Street and Jordan Street. A car at the scene had a shattered back windshield and was towed the next morning; multiple nearby vehicles and buildings also showed bullet damage.
Berry’s family described her as vibrant, generous and loving and said she was giving a ride to Roderick White, who was also shot but survived. The family believes Berry was an innocent bystander and suspects Roderick White may know more about what happened than he has told police. The Elizabeth City Police Department, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation were handling the investigation. No arrests had been announced in connection with the killings at that time.
If anyone has information about the shooting or remembers seeing activity in the Perry Street–Jordan Street area on December 2, 2021, please come forward.
