On October 20, 2021, 34-year-old Gilbert Noel Guzman was found shot to death in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Cary, North Carolina. The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. in the 1200 block of Village Greenway, near SE Maynard Road and East Cary Middle School. Officers arriving at the scene also found another person seriously injured; that person was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Cary Police identified 24-year-old Luis Mario Velasquez-Guevara as the suspect and initially charged him with murder, attempted murder, and felonious assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. Investigators said those involved knew one another. In February 2024 a grand jury indicted Velasquez-Guevara on attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill or inflict serious injury. The inquiry also raised questions about security at the apartment complex and whether better measures could have prevented the shooting.
