Rosendo Montiel Jr. was 14 when he was shot in the front yard of his home on Foxfire Drive in Henderson, North Carolina, on October 19, 2021. Emergency crews found him at about 12:20 p.m.; he was taken to Duke University Hospital and placed on life support. His family removed life support on October 21 and he died that day.

An eighth-grade student at Vance County Middle School, Rosendo had been raised by his grandmother, Sherrie Morado, after the earlier death of his mother, Rebeca Dawn Terrell. He enjoyed basketball, PlayStation and rap music, and was remembered by friends as funny, caring and chill. The Vance County Sheriff’s Office identified a 15-year-old suspect, who surrendered on November 3, 2021; the youth was first charged with attempted first-degree murder and the charge was upgraded to first-degree murder after Rosendo’s death. The investigation remains ongoing.
