Officer Jason Shuping, 25, was fatally shot on December 16, 2020, while responding to reports of an attempted carjacking at a Sonic in Concord, North Carolina. A North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement agent had found an abandoned vehicle from a single-car crash on the I-85 exit ramp to Bruton Smith Boulevard; a woman at the scene said a man had tried to carjack her at the restaurant. Officer Shuping and another Concord officer went to the restaurant with the ALE agent and encountered the suspect, who produced a gun and opened fire, killing Officer Shuping and wounding another officer. The suspect was also killed in the exchange of gunfire.

Shuping had served with the Concord Police Department for 18 months and is survived by his wife, parents, and brother. The Concord Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation opened an inquiry into the shooting; findings have not been released. The community honored Shuping with posthumous awards, a bridge named in his memory, and retirement of his unit number #4434.
