Seventeen-year-old Xavier Nathaniel Gibbs, an African American male, was shot and killed on September 15, 2020, at the Laurel Pointe Apartments in Salisbury, North Carolina. Salisbury police were called for reports of shots fired at about 2:20 a.m.; officers who arrived found Xavier dead of a gunshot wound. He had spent some time in Salisbury previously but did not live at the apartment complex, and his connection to the property is unclear.
No suspect has been identified and the investigation remains ongoing. Concerns have been raised about the apartment complex’s security and whether better measures might have prevented the shooting; a law firm suggested an independent inspection of the property to evaluate possible negligent security. Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact Salisbury police.
