Dondre Shaw, a 26-year-old Black man from Leland, North Carolina, died on August 14, 2020 after an argument that escalated into a shooting. He was found with a gunshot wound on W.B. and S Road, off Old Fayetteville Road, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators from the Leland Police Department, the State Bureau of Investigation, and the Brunswick County District Attorney’s Office conducted a multi-agency inquiry. That investigation produced an arrest: 67-year-old Ronald Lee Merrick was charged with second-degree murder and held at the Brunswick County jail without bond. The authorities reported the shooting stemmed from the argument between Shaw and Merrick.

The shooting left Shaw’s family and the Leland community mourning and raised questions about gun violence and conflict resolution in the area. If anyone witnessed the incident or has information that was not shared with investigators, please come forward.
