Kanize Jackson was 20 when he was shot and killed on August 5, 2020, in front of his family’s home on Buffalo Street in West Asheville. He was described as sweet, silly and kind-hearted, a music lover who helped care for and protected his three sisters; his mother, Meiko Jackson, called him the man of the house.
The shooting was the ninth homicide in Asheville that year. Police have identified suspects but no arrests have been announced, and investigators continue to seek witnesses. Family members and the community have emphasized the toll of gun violence in Asheville, noting that seven of the nine 2020 homicide victims were Black men ages 18 to 29.
