Brandon Carter was 24 when he was found fatally shot on May 4, 2020, in Waynesville, North Carolina. Haywood County deputies were alerted after a 911 call about suspicious activity at the entrance to the Shadow Woods subdivision on Ratcliff Cove Road around 12:06 a.m.; a second call shortly after reported a gunshot. Deputies located Carter lying on the side of the road with a fatal gunshot wound.

The investigation led to the arrest of 18-year-old Kevin Michael Carey of Waynesville, who was charged with murder and taken into custody without bond. Detectives continued to piece together the events that led to Carter’s death, and the community was asked to provide any information that might help.
