Lares Santwan Blue, a 31-year-old African American man, was shot and killed on April 23, 2020, at the Marathon Lucky Stop gas station in Raeford, North Carolina. Deputies from the Hoke County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of a shooting along the 2100 block of U.S. 401 Business just before 3:30 p.m. They found Lares unresponsive in the gas station parking lot; he was taken to a nearby hospital where he died of his injuries.
The investigation led to the arrest of 31-year-old Willie Davis McArn Jr., of Raeford, who was charged with first-degree murder. The Hoke County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation was ongoing at the time of the arrest. Lares is survived by his son Ari Reeves-Oatis, his parents Charles and Dorothy Blue, and several siblings; a funeral service was held April 29, 2020, at Pauline T. Buie Chapel in Raeford.
Reports have raised questions about security and safety at the gas station and suggested possible negligence that could prompt further legal action. Did anyone see Lares at the Marathon Lucky Stop that afternoon or have information about what happened there?
