Brett Thomas Butler, 33, of Matthews, North Carolina, was shot and killed on March 18, 2020. The shooting occurred around 6 p.m. near Matthews Township Parkway and Sam Newell Road. Butler was driving when he was shot; his vehicle then struck another car and a building. He was taken to Atrium Health’s Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte and later died of his injuries.

Investigators tied the shooting to an earlier roadway dispute on Highway 74 between Butler and the suspect. The suspect was described as a Hispanic male about 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 8 inches tall and was last seen driving a black 2007 Acura TSX with North Carolina plate PMX-5683. A 17-year-old male was identified as the suspect; because he is a juvenile his name has not been released. On April 1, 2020, that juvenile was taken into custody in Stallings under a Juvenile Secure Custody Order for murder. An 18-year-old, Ricardo Hernandez Sandoval of Monroe, was charged with Accessory After the Fact of a Felony and held in Mecklenburg County Jail.
