Shakur Kapone Hedgebeth, a 25-year-old African American man, was fatally shot on August 21, 2019, in Plymouth, North Carolina. The shooting occurred around 9 p.m. in the 200 block of Wilson Street; family members at the scene initially thought the sound of gunfire was fireworks. Shakur had just celebrated his 25th birthday when he was killed.
Authorities say Terrance Lamont Williams, 35, of Jamesville, North Carolina, attacked and fatally shot Shakur; Williams was charged with First Degree Murder. Walter Phelps, who was present and fired at Williams while the attack was underway, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and later accepted a plea reducing the charge to possession of a firearm by a felon. The Plymouth Police Department and the State Bureau of Investigation are handling the case and continue to seek information from the public.
If anyone knew Shakur or witnessed the events on Wilson Street that night, please share what you know with investigators.
