Malachi Jaheim Hailey was 17 when he was found dead behind the Dobbins Heights Community Center in Rockingham, North Carolina, on August 6, 2019. A 12-year-old boy discovered the body while playing basketball nearby. Initial circumstances were unclear; investigators later determined Malachi was the victim of a robbery and manslaughter.
Edward McNair Sloan, 27, was arrested and charged in connection with the case. Charges listed included voluntary manslaughter, possession of a stolen firearm, and altering the firearm’s serial number. Sloan was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and received a 17-year prison sentence. He had prior convictions for felony larceny and had faced charges including attempted murder and assault on a child under 12.
Malachi’s mother, Annette Leak, held a vigil in August 2021 to mark the two-year anniversary and called for continued remembrance and justice. Does anyone have information about Malachi’s whereabouts or activities in Rockingham in the days before August 6, 2019?
