Joseph Marcell Desouza, a 17-year-old from Cabarrus County, North Carolina, was fatally shot outside his home in Albemarle on June 22, 2019. He was involved with a mentorship program called Developing Adolescents Strengthening Homes and was remembered by his community as joyful, kind, sweet and funny.

The Albemarle Police Department reported the shooting and has been investigating, but has not disclosed any suspects or motives; the investigation remains ongoing. The loss deeply affected friends, family and program colleagues who say he will always hold a special place in their hearts.
