Rashawn Franklin, a 24-year-old African American man, was shot and killed on May 2, 2019, in the front yard of a residence on North Orion Street in Kinston, North Carolina. The shooting happened in the afternoon; the assailants fled the scene and Rashawn died at the location. Another man, 41-year-old Jonathan Simmons, was wounded and taken to Vidant Medical Center.

A police investigation, assisted by the USMS Violent Fugitive Task Force, led to three arrests. Dantravelle Shackleford was found hiding in the trunk of a vehicle during a traffic stop and charged with murder, attempted murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Sandra Johnson, who was in the vehicle, was charged with accessory after the fact of murder and misdemeanor child abuse because a child in her care was in the car. Chipel Lisbon, the vehicle’s driver, was charged with accessory after the fact of murder. Reports describe the shooting as a targeted attack; the motive remains unclear.
