Khali Amir Holmes, 24, was shot and killed on January 13, 2019, inside the DTLR store at Carolina Place Mall in Pineville, North Carolina. Pineville police say a physical confrontation between Holmes and a store employee escalated and the employee produced a semi-automatic handgun and shot Holmes. Paramedics pronounced Holmes dead at the scene.

The employee turned themself in shortly after the incident; police have not released the employee’s name and no charges had been filed as of this update. Investigators are working with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, reviewing video footage and interviewing witnesses. Police say they believe the shooting grew out of an ongoing dispute between Holmes and the employee rather than being random.
