Gary Skelton, 70, and his wife Jackie Skelton, 66, were found shot to death at their home in Leggett, North Carolina, on September 6, 2018. Gary, a retired banker who served as Leggett’s mayor, and Jackie, an oncology nurse, were described as well-known and respected in their small community; their killings prompted an immediate investigation by the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators arrested two men from Tarboro: 25-year-old Keith Earl Williams and 18-year-old Mitchell Brinson. Williams was charged with first-degree murder and had prior convictions including assault with a deadly weapon and felony possession of a firearm by a felon; he had been released from prison eight days before the Skeltons’ deaths. Brinson was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. A third person, 31-year-old Dakeithia Nesha Andrews of Rocky Mount, was later arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon and held on secured bond of $100,000.
The deaths devastated the town and prompted a continuing investigation. Does anyone have information about the Skeltons, their routines, or activity in Leggett around September 2018?
