Steven Calloway Jr, a 25-year-old African American man, was shot and killed on August 11, 2018, at Palmer Green Apartments in Raeford, North Carolina. The shooting occurred about 2:30 a.m. after Calloway had invited friends over; some guests brought along people he did not know. A 15-year-old boy who had been among the unknown guests left when asked to do so and then returned and shot Calloway in the chest. Calloway was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he died of his injuries.

The teenage suspect was charged with murder, possession of a handgun by a minor, and discharging a firearm within city limits, and was held without bond at a juvenile detention facility. The motive for the shooting is not clear. Calloway’s mother, Melinda Calloway, has spoken publicly about her grief and her desire for justice.
