Jessica Ramsey was 16 and from Deep Run, North Carolina. She was a student at South Lenoir High School, active in athletics and clubs, and remembered for a love of volleyball and horses.

The shooting happened at a home on Bryce Hardison Road, where Jessica was found with a gunshot wound to her chin. The wound was described as inflicted at close range. Authorities initially investigated whether the shooting was accidental or intentional. Jessica’s stepfather, Lathan Thurman, turned himself in and was charged with felony involuntary manslaughter; he was released on a $100,000 unsecured bond.
