Carlos Mejia Escamilla, an 18-year-old from Selma, North Carolina, was found dead from an apparent gunshot wound on January 8, 2018. His body was discovered in an overgrown yard outside a mobile home at 120 Neuse Bend Road, off Grabtown Road in the Brogden community east of Smithfield. Deputies arrived about 12:53 PM.

Authorities arrested 19-year-old Tony Lee Hines, who lived at the property, and charged him with Carlos’s murder the same day. Officials have not released a motive and say the investigation is ongoing. Carlos’s death was recorded as the first homicide in Johnston County in 2018; funeral services were handled by Sanders Funeral Home in Smithfield.
