Kendra LaShea Kendro Breeden was 26 when she died on September 27, 2017. According to reports, she and another woman, Shanelle Locklear, were sitting in a vehicle on Buie Philadelphus Road near Pembroke that night when someone opened fire. Kendra was struck in the head and later died at Southeastern Regional Hospital; Locklear was shot in the legs and survived.

Authorities identified 58-year-old Jerry Dean Oxendine as the shooter and charged him with first-degree murder, discharging a firearm into occupied property causing serious bodily injury, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. Police say the shooting occurred after Oxendine went to the road in response to a call from his son about being followed; the son later pulled onto the shoulder and Kendra and Locklear stopped their vehicle in the road before shots were fired.
