Bobby Lee Johnson, a 26-year-old African American man, was killed by gunfire on September 25, 2017, in Whiteville, North Carolina. The shooting happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. at the Sandy Ridge apartment complex. Responding officers found Johnson in front of an apartment building with several people nearby; he died at the scene.
No arrests or suspects have been reported. The shooting was noted as part of an upswing in violence around the Sandy Ridge and Nolan Avenue neighborhoods. The Murray Law Firm, representing victims of violence and alleging negligent security, has suggested inadequate lighting, lack of surveillance cameras, and absence of security patrols at the complex may have contributed and indicated the family may have grounds for a wrongful death claim. Investigators continue to gather information and evidence.
If anyone knew Bobby Lee Johnson, witnessed the shooting, or has information about security issues at Sandy Ridge, please come forward with what you know.
