Kelby Ishmael Swinton Moore was 20 when he was shot and killed in Asheville, North Carolina, on July 8, 2017. Officers found him in the Livingston Street Apartment complex parking lot with two gunshot wounds; he was taken to Mission Hospital and pronounced dead. Witnesses said Kelby was unarmed.

Witnesses told investigators that 22-year-old Sharod Terrell Woods arrived at the complex, argued with Kelby and then fired about ten rounds, striking Kelby twice and damaging several parked cars, before fleeing. Woods later turned himself in on July 13, 2017, admitted to the shooting and claimed self-defense. Authorities collected evidence they described as showing Woods intentionally and maliciously shot and killed Kelby; Woods was initially charged with first-degree murder and later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. On August 5, 2019, a judge sentenced Woods to an active prison term of 144 months minimum to 185 months maximum.

Kelby was born August 23, 1996, to Felicia Swinton and Kelby Moore, was active in church and sports, and participated in the Nazarene Baptist Church Youth Choir and Brotherhood. Does anyone have memories of Kelby or information about the Erskine-Walton neighborhood incident that could add context to what happened that day?
