Leonard Pettiford, 51, of Roxboro, North Carolina, was found dead in his Halifax Road home on May 6, 2017, after he failed to show up for work and his son discovered the body. Pettiford had been shot twice with a shotgun, once in the face and once in the collarbone area.

The Person County Sheriff’s Office investigation resulted in three arrests. Dudley Wayne Pruitt Jr., the father of Pettiford’s girlfriend, confessed and was charged with murder and non-negligent homicide. Ashley Marie Pruitt, 19, was charged with murder, and Walter William Kyle Chambers, 21, was arrested and charged as an accessory after the fact. Family members said there had been threats from Ashley Pruitt and noted a tumultuous relationship between Pettiford and his girlfriend’s family; despite a reported confession, uncertainty remained about who fired the shotgun.
