Michele Kennington Williams, 51, was shot and killed on December 9, 2016, while sitting in her car in a residential parking area on Collington Drive in Cary, North Carolina. Multiple shell casings were recovered at the scene and several rounds struck nearby homes; no other injuries were reported. The shooter was her estranged husband, David Sloan Williams, 55, who turned himself in to police shortly after the shooting and was charged with murder.

Michele was a kindergarten teacher at Timber Drive Elementary School in Garner and a devoted mother. She had been staying temporarily at the Collington Drive residence and had recently told friends and family she feared David; the couple had separated in April 2016 and had disputes over financial matters related to their separation and divorce. David had purchased firearms and ammunition in the months before the killing and had trained with at least one weapon at a shooting range.
