Tonya Boyd, 43, was shot and killed outside her Rocky Mount, North Carolina, home on October 31, 2016, while escorting a younger child to the bus stop near Westry Road and Primrose Place. Her 21-year-old son Emmanuel Boyd was with her and was also shot; he survived. The younger child was not injured.

Police identified her ex-boyfriend, Brian Vincent White, 48 at the time, as the shooter. Court records show Boyd had filed a protective order after threats from White, including warnings about a closed-casket funeral, and that White had a history of violating that order. After the attack White was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in Tonya’s death, attempted first-degree murder for Emmanuel’s shooting, and violating the protective order.
