Shai Taylor Valentine, a 21-year-old African American man, was found unresponsive with what appeared to be gunshot wounds on October 28, 2016, in the 100 Block of Astor Court in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Police recovered him at that location; his death was described as a significant loss to his family and community, and he was remembered as a loving son, brother, and friend.

The investigation led to the arrest of 26-year-old Ormond Qudre Cobb, who was charged with Shai’s murder. Cobb was already in the Wayne County Detention Center on an unrelated attempted murder charge when arrested in connection with this case and was being held without bond.
