Eric A. Terry, a 31-year-old African American man from Raeford, North Carolina, died on October 2, 2016. Deputies found his body after responding to a vehicle accident around 7:50 p.m. on Gillis Hill Road; the location tied to the initial call was 2950 Lindsay Road at Rockfish Motorsports. Investigators determined the crash resulted from a road rage incident in which the suspect, Daniel Wells Cummings, pursued Terry’s vehicle in a fit of rage and the pursuit culminated in the collision that killed Terry.
Daniel Wells Cummings, 32, of Old Lowery Road in Red Springs, was arrested on October 3, 2016, and charged with first-degree murder and shooting into an occupied vehicle; he was held in the Hoke County jail without bond. Authorities said Cummings had been pursuing Terry and that the road rage episode escalated to the point Cummings shot Terry. Sheriff Hubert Peterkin said more charges were expected and urged anyone with information to come forward.
If anyone witnessed the pursuit, the shooting, or has information about what led up to the road rage, please share what is known with investigators.
