Malik Devon Brown Burnette, an 18-year-old African American male, was shot to death on July 26, 2016, in a Chapel Hill cul-de-sac on Jackie Robinson Street near Adelaide Walters Street. The shooting occurred shortly before 10 p.m.; Malik was pronounced dead at UNC Hospitals. Another 18-year-old male, Tanner Cobb, was wounded in the same incident and treated at the hospital in stable condition.

Five people were arrested in connection with the double shooting and charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit robbery, and accessory after the fact: Laquida Shuntae Poston, 26; Ranaire Lewis II, 22; Thomas Oliver, 30; Jalen Raekwon Hackney, 18; and Denzel Lamont Spikes, 23. All were held at the Orange County Jail without bond except Spikes, who was arrested in Lexington, South Carolina, and awaited extradition. Their next court date was scheduled for August 15, 2016.

The community held a candlelight vigil attended by more than 200 people. Family and friends remembered Malik as well liked and respectable; his cousin Lavonda Burnette said he was not involved in criminal activity and that his life mattered more than the few hundred dollars reported as a possible motive. A community organizer promoting Malik’s Village called for programs to offer constructive outlets for youth and reduce gun violence.
