Wesley Collin Carpenter, 27, was shot multiple times and died on May 1, 2016, in Rolesville, North Carolina. The shooting happened about 4:45 a.m.; Carpenter was found conscious but unresponsive and was taken to Wake Medical Center, where he died on the operating table. The shooter was identified as 29-year-old James Michael Aaron, who called 911 saying he had shot an intruder.

Investigators later determined Carpenter was not an intruder but the estranged husband of Aaron’s nanny, Sophia Media Carpenter. The night before, Carpenter and Aaron had been drinking together at Carpenter’s Wake Forest home, then went to Aaron’s Rolesville residence. Texts on Sophia’s phone reportedly show she gave Aaron directions to Carpenter’s home. Sophia, who was upstairs with a toddler, called 911 pleading with Aaron not to shoot Carpenter again. Search warrants noted Carpenter had recently installed surveillance cameras that might have recorded Aaron’s presence.

Carpenter was a Marine veteran who had received a Purple Heart. Early reports say both men had been drinking heavily and Aaron may have been on medication that should not be mixed with alcohol; warrants also suggested the men were not friends and that Carpenter had been arrested earlier that year for trespassing on Aaron’s property. Does anyone have information about the surveillance footage or the interactions between these men that night?
