Crystal Dionne Cruz, 32, of Bladenboro, North Carolina, was found dead on October 13, 2015. Deputies discovered her body in a vehicle located in the backyard of the home where she lived with her fiancé, David Burney, and his son, Marquail Allen Burney.

Authorities arrested 20-year-old Marquail Allen Burney and charged him with first-degree murder in connection with Cruz’s death. Investigators say David Burney reported Cruz missing late Tuesday night; deputies searching the Highway 41 West property found her body in the backyard vehicle. Shortly after leaving the home, Marquail Burney allegedly stole a vehicle from a nearby business and was found the next morning in a retail parking lot in Lumberton, where the stolen vehicle was recovered and he was taken into custody.

The investigation was ongoing with coordination from the District Attorney’s Office as evidence was collected. If anyone knew Crystal, the Burney household, or saw activity at that Highway 41 West address on October 12–13, contact investigators with information.
