Richard ONeal Longmire, a 39-year-old African American man, was killed on May 31, 2015, in Benson, North Carolina. He was found lying in the front yard of a house on West Harnett Street with gunshot wounds to his head and abdomen and was pronounced dead at the scene. Longmire frequently visited that address to exchange custody of his children with their mother. Police were called earlier that night for an altercation; Longmire was shot hours later.

Investigators identified two suspects, brothers Jermale Tavaris Williams, 29, and Terry Lamont Williams, 33. Jermale surrendered to Wake County authorities and faced a charge of first-degree murder; Terry was charged with accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. Those charges were later dropped because eyewitness accounts conflicted. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is assisting and a reward is being offered for information. The Benson Police Department says the investigation remains open and active.
