Steven Clifton Smith, a 28-year-old African American man, was shot and killed on May 2, 2015, on Green Street in Monroe, North Carolina. He was struck multiple times in a pre-dawn shooting that became Monroe’s first murder of the year. Smith was a father of four with another child on the way; family described him as loving, caring and giving. His sister, Shameka Burns, rushed to the hospital on her birthday but he died before she could see him.

The Monroe Police Department opened an investigation but struggled to develop leads because the shooting occurred late at night and there were few witnesses. Officers continued to canvass the area and ask the public for information, and no suspects had been identified at the time. The family held a candlelight vigil at Smith’s home on Maurice Street and planned a funeral at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church in Marshville.

Does anyone have information about that night on Green Street or recall seeing anything that could help investigators?
