On February 10, 2015, 19-year-old Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha was one of three people shot to death in a Chapel Hill, North Carolina condominium. Razan, her sister Yusor Mohammad Abu-Salha, 21, and Yusor’s husband Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, were found dead in their Finley Forest home on Summerwalk Circle. Neighbor Craig Stephen Hicks turned himself in later that day and was arrested; police initially described an ongoing dispute over parking as the motive.
Hicks was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling, and a Durham County grand jury indicted him on those charges on February 16, 2015. The FBI and the Department of Justice opened separate inquiries but federal authorities did not find sufficient evidence to bring hate crime charges. The deaths prompted national attention and debate about whether the killings were bias-motivated and about gaps in hate crime law.
Did anyone in the Chapel Hill community have information about the neighbors or the parking dispute that could shed light on what happened?
