On February 10, 2015, Yusor Mohammad Barakat, 21, was shot and killed in her Chapel Hill, North Carolina home at the Finley Forest Condominiums on Summerwalk Circle. She died alongside her husband Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, and her sister Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19. The three victims were described as being of Middle Eastern descent and noted for academic achievement and community service.

Chapel Hill police say the suspect, neighbor Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, turned himself in shortly after the shootings and was arrested. Authorities initially reported a neighbor dispute over parking as a possible motive; officials also considered whether religious bias played a role because the victims were Muslim and the suspect identified as an atheist. The FBI and the Department of Justice conducted their own investigations but federal prosecutors did not bring hate crime charges.

The killings prompted national conversations about hate crimes and the safety of Muslim communities. If anyone knew Yusor or has information about her life or the events that night, please share what you can.
