Rahsaan Malik Williams, 21, was shot in the chest on the 1700 block of George Avenue in Kinston, North Carolina, at about 7:12 a.m. on September 12, 2014. He was taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead. The shooting happened near the Children’s Village Academy, which was placed on lockdown as a precaution after the incident.

A school bus driver who passed the scene called 911 and investigators spoke with students who were on the bus. Rahsaan’s aunt, Beverly Williams, described him as a loving family member; he also left behind a daughter who was less than a year old at the time. The Kinston Department of Public Safety and the Kinston Police Department investigated, but no arrests had been announced. Sgt. Woody Spencer commented on community frustration over the violence and urged patience and cooperation.
