Michael Gene Cain, 49, of Rockingham, North Carolina, was shot to death in the early hours of August 25, 2014, after an argument at the Cordova home of acquaintance Robert David Erby II. Cain lived at 245 Ledbetter Street in the Cordova community and was described as a husband, father, grandfather, son and brother. Deputies found his body in the front room, leaning against a cabinet with apparent gunshot wounds; a semi-automatic rifle was found nearby leaning against the couch.

Erby, 40, was taken into custody and charged with an open count of murder and held without bond. Detectives seized a Plainfield Machine Co. .30-caliber carbine M1 rifle, a Springfield .45-caliber handgun, live rounds, spent casings and bullet fragments from Erby’s home. Cain’s body was sent to the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh for autopsy. The motive remained under investigation.
