Ten-year-old Trekwan Covington was killed on July 30, 2014, in Hope Mills, North Carolina, when an estranged husband opened fire during a domestic dispute. The attack began at the man’s home on Bramblegate Road, where he allegedly assaulted his estranged wife with a knife and a gun; she escaped to her father’s mobile home on New Moon Drive. The attacker followed and, using an AR-15 rifle, fired more than 60 rounds into the residence while Trekwan and six other people were inside.
Trekwan was struck in a hallway; Gary Frank Simpson, the woman’s father, was shot and killed in the living room. Three people died in the incident and three others were wounded, including three deputies who were responding. The alleged shooter, identified as Andrew J. Michaelis, was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder; reports note he had a history of domestic violence and prior altercations with his estranged wife.
