Jeffrey Daylon Mitchell, 47, was shot and killed on July 12, 2014, at a home on Jordan Lane in Wake Forest, North Carolina. The shooter was identified as 89-year-old Calvin Anderson Ray; Ray told authorities Mitchell broke down his door and threatened him during an argument about a broken air conditioner. Authorities were awaiting the medical examiner’s report while the interim district attorney, Ned Mangum, said charges were unlikely at that stage.
Mitchell’s brother, Scott Mitchell, disputed Ray’s account of self-defense, saying Ray had threatened Jeffrey multiple times in the past and that Jeffrey would never have harmed him. Reports say Mitchell and Ray had known each other about seven years and argued frequently but had not before escalated to violence. Mitchell was survived by his parents Douglas Mitchell and Iva Spell, stepfather Leo Spell, his sons Daylon and Evan Mitchell, and siblings Scott Mitchell and Michelle Norris.
